Who Built the Model

Jacob V. implemented this site’s Gompertz–Makeham survival model.

Jacob V. is not a physician or an actuary. The Gompertz–Makeham survival model is computed from this calculator’s own constants: a Makeham term A set by sex, a mortality doubling period of 8.5 years and a Gompertz term B solved for each country-and-sex baseline.

What It Runs On

The estimate comes from a Gompertz–Makeham survival model fitted for each of 96 countries and each sex to life expectancy at birth from UN World Population Prospects 2024.

Body mass index (BMI) and smoking adjust the country-and-sex baseline by the calculator’s own weights, scaled to published results (Lancet 2016 for BMI, and Doll and Peto, BMJ 2004, for the smoking ceiling). Alcohol, outlook, activity and diet adjust it by calculator weights rather than a published result, with only the direction taken from a named study for alcohol (GBD, Lancet 2018) and diet (PREDIMED, NEJM 2018).

What It Stores

The calculator stores none of your answers: the calculation runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to a server.

The calculator reads nine inputs in your browser: four required answers and five optional answers, with no sleep, disease, medication, family-history or genetic input among them. The colour palette a reader picks is saved in the reader’s own browser and never sent to a server.
